The pictographic of""is composed of a hand that holding a ferule on the right part, the character "(son)"represents the child on the lower left, two skewed crossing symbols shows a mark of whipping at the top of "(son)". "" is a description of a man holding a ferule to educate a child. 

甲骨文的“教”,右边是一只手拿着教鞭(攴pū);左下方的“子”表示小孩,“子”上是两个交叉符号(爻),表示鞭打的痕迹;整个“教”字描绘的是一人手持教鞭在教育小孩。后来“教”变成形声字,左边的“孝”字表示读音,右面的“攵”是攴的变形,表示教鞭。

For Lack of Education, The Nature is In Alteration.

“For lack of education, the nature is in alteration”means if people have not been well educated in their childhood,the good nature of a man will change with the change of the environment.

The establishment of the Confucian educational idea is based on the educational thought of "the great learning", urged morality and wisdom must be learned well,have both ability and integrity. Make people have perfect moralquality(cultivate one's moral character), has the ability to regulate the family, country and the world. Zeng Zi,who get Confucius's heart, argued awaring good virtue, getting knowledge through investigation, these are all parts of"teaching and learning".

苟不教,性乃迁

《三字经》中的这句话说的是:如果从小不好好教育,人善良的天性就会随着环境的变化而改变。

儒家教育理念的确立是基于一种“大学”的教育思想,主张德智兼修,德才兼备。使人既有完善的道德品质(修身),又具有齐家、治国、平天下的外达才能的君子、贤人。得孔子心传的曾子,所作的《大学》,讲“明明德”,“格物致知”,这些都是“教习”的一部分。

儒家的教育思想,首先是对人的理解。所以《三字经》在说对人的教化之前,要先说人的本性(人之初,性本善)。无论是孔子的性善论,还是荀子的性恶论,都是基于人的天性。正因为人有这样的本性,所以才需要教育去巩固或改变,通过后天的教化,使人性向好的方向发展。
